In an effort to promote the plantation of medicinal plants among the rural masses, the Social Forestry Division of Bongaigaon has developed its first nursery of healing flora at Manikpur.
The nursery, established with an expenditure of around Rs 9.5 lakh, spans 1.5 hectares and houses 10 lakh seedlings of various medicinal plants, including Indian gooseberry, tamarind, Neem, and holy basil.
Gaunadeep Das, Bongaigaon Divisional Officer (DFO) of Social Forestry, stated that it took five months to grow the seedlings with utmost care. Mahidhar Ray, president of ‘Seuj Manikpur’, expressed optimism about the nursery’s benefits for the local community. The initiative is part of an AYUSH scheme.
